Resume Dos and Don’ts for Aspiring Makeup Artists

Makeup schools in Florida and around the country teach their students the necessary techniques and skills required for the field of makeup artistry.  However, one of the most important marketing tools is a winning resume.  An appropriately designed resume can often make the difference between booking a job or not.

A resume is a one to two page summary of your education, skills, achievements, and experience.  It should convey your education and experience. A resume should be organized in a clean and systematic manner.  A cover letter should always accompany your resume.  Not all make up artistry schools teach their students how to put together an effective resume and cover letter.  This article will give you the most important resume and cover letter tips for aspiring makeup artists.

In order to write a stand-out resume, you need to review, summarize, and present your experience and achievements.  Typically, you want to stick to a one-page resume as many employers won’t take the time to read a two-page resume.  Resumes need to be concise and straight to the point while cover letters allow for more detailed information.

This is what your resume should include:

·         Contact information: You need to include your name, telephone number, email address, website, and possibly social networking websites if they’re business related.
·         Objective: An objective informs potential employers of what type of position you’re seeking.  You should tailor it for each job you seek.
·         Education: Make sure to list all of the schools you’ve attended from your most recent school to your high school.  You should include any certificates, diplomas, or degrees and dates awarded.
·         Experience: You want to give potential employers an overview of your work history.  List most recent jobs first and work backward.  You should include the name of the company, the location, the dates of your employment and your responsibilities there.

A cover letter goes into more detail about your experience and qualifications than your resume.  Employers want to know what value you can bring to their business.  Tailor the cover letter to each specific job. Explain why you’re the right candidate for the position and who referred you (if anyone).
